Introduction:

This heavy woollen is a felted melton fabric. These classics are super hard-wearing, natural fibres and perfect for classic coats and so much more.

Colour:

Silver Grey Cosy boasts a solid light grey hue, the colour of an early misty morning when the mist sits in the valleys just before the sun rises above the horizon. This versatile cool hue is ideal as a classic stand-alone statement or to temper brighter colours when colour-blocking. grey hues are a 'go-to' when people reach for garments that are easy to coordinate with existing pieces within the wardrobe.

Properties:

Silver Grey Cosy has a dense hard-wearing feel with a cosy lightly napped/brushed surface. Melton fabrics are often the same on the face and the reverse and this is no exception. This fabric is super stable and boasts a heavy drape quality. It has excellent natural insulation properties perfect to keep the wearer warm and cosy, it will shrug off a light shower of rain.

Garment Suggestions:

The hard-wearing woollen feel makes this fabric best suited to outerwear garments and accessories; Duffle Coats and pea coats spring to mind. To soften against the feel of the wool, line this fabric with a silky soft lining from our Jewel Jacquard Collection.

Melton fabrics are super easy to use and they are less prone to fray. Create a simple unlined cardigan-style blanket coat. These satisfying makes are like comfort blankets you can wear. Create the cutest children's duffle coats with coordinating toggles, classic coats and capes, blazers and '80s/'90s style overcoats. There are a plethora of patterns aimed at confident beginners and intermediate sewists for you to choose from.

We love The Avid Seamstress - The Coat, Thrifty Stitcher's Dawson Coatigan and Paper cut Pattern's Sapporo Coat to name just a few. If you want a quick make, take advantage of the low fray qualities of melton and felted type wools and create waterfall front coatigans with simple belt closures. These are really easy to make and are excellent for layering as are simple gilet styles and classic waistcoats like our Pattern Stash - Jemima Waistcoat

Other Uses:

Structured bags, holdalls, storage cubes, footstools and other utility-like storage ideas. This dense woollen will make excellent draught-proofing, insulation fabric used to line door curtains, create draught excluders, doorstops etc.

They also make an ideal base for 2D needle-felted projects which can be made into bags, cushions and wall hangings, etc. Silver Grey Cosy. is also ideal for blankets & throws too! Why not personalise yours with a little needle felting or applique - team with your offcuts of Yorkshire Tweed fabrics for a wonderful combination.

Why choose wool fabric?

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
