Introduction:

This range of suiting to denim/chambray style fabrics in a variety of compositions, tones and weaves is suitable for a wide range of smart/casual clothing which will mix and match together perfectly and has a designer pedigree. Originally made for the same designer as our SOS Collection. Equally stunning and perfect for cross-seasonal wear for the whole family.

Colour:

Grey, a go-to, reliable, versatile hue. Think of how this colour is represented in nature, the gentle but determined pachyderms, robust rhinoceros and stealthy sharks. Grey is often seen as a neutral choice for suits and corporate clothing, but it's in no way boring.

View this as the backbone of your workwear wardrobe - a staple for contrasting vibrance. Grey is a useful tone for grounding bolder colours or designs. Wear garments made in our Determined Grey - Fine Worsted and carry that robust and determined air of incredible creatures.

Properties:

Determined Grey is a wonderful, fine Italian woven, all-wool worsted suiting fabric. The fine-combed worsted yarns in this versatile suiting have a slight tinge of beige- producing a grey tone that will sit comfortably with anything. This expertly woven fabric has a stable handle and a soft and elegant drape. Remember suiting fabric is not just for suits. This is a designer fabric that you can quite literally dress up or dress down.

Garment Suggestion:

Determined Grey is perfect for a mountain of uses! This fabric will hold crisp details like collars and cuffs plus it will form superb ruffles, gathers and pleats.  Grey-toned stable fabrics have perennial appeal. The colours suit most skin tones and sit with so many other things in your wardrobe. Excellent for teaming with bright or jewel-toned fabrics.

Make our very own Cordelia Trousers from The Pattern Stash! Create perfect pleats and full drapey wide legs with a Fabworks exclusive sewing pattern! Do not be restricted and think you can only make trousers and jackets from Determined Grey, this lightweight fabric is naturally temperature regulating and will make alternative workwear - shirt dresses, tunics, pinafore dresses and the most elegant and wearable dresses you will return to, season after season.

Vogue Patterns V1672 is an elegant wrap bodice dress with a gently flared skirt, perfect for wearing across the seasons. If trousers are more your style, the Zadie Jumpsuit from Paper Theory Patterns has similar lines to V1672.

Utility styles in grey tones are super useful and never date, fabulous for adding a smart casual twist when made in smart suiting fabric! The Assembly Line Patterns are ideal for utility styles as are Merchant & Mills and The Makers Atelier. There are of course lots of other fabulous pattern brands out there, just choose patterns that let the fabric sell itself.

If plain grey is a little uninteresting add a designer flourish by embellishing your garments with machine embroidery or pre-made embroidered appliques add colourful, contrasting topstitching and alternative coloured buttons and you will have totally unique pieces.

Why choose wool fabric?

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
