Introduction:

Black Bear - Duffle Coating is a reassuringly warming, woollen fabric that would be perfect for getting cosy in to beat the winter chills. Not quite as heavy as its sibling Big Black Bear.

Colour:

Black Bear is woven with 100% wool yarns in classic black. This winter staple has a classic look and feel the ideal fail-safe winter coating fabric.

Properties:

Black Bear is a heavyweight closely woven fabric with a felted wool, blanket-like hand, perfect for protecting against the elements. Stable and extremely hard-wearing, wool duffle coating naturally repels water to keep you dry and warm. With a heavy weight and accompanying drape quality, this fabric feels like a protective hug from a mama bear, envelope yourself in this warming woollen and escape the chills.

Garment Suggestions:

Traditional Duffle or overcoats are of course the perfect garment to make from this sturdy fabric, and the blank canvas, solid black background allows plenty of room for creative freedom, allowing one to embellish with folk style embroidery or needle felting (akin to Austrian folk styles)  Get creative and add ethnic embroidered trims for instant results and a unique style to be proud of.

"Did you know this coarse, thick woollen fabric takes its name from the traditional Duffel Coat, which takes its name from the town of Duffel in the province of Antwerp in Belgium where the original Duffel fabric was made? Field Marshall Montgomery created an iconic style of wearing the duffel throughout his WW2 campaigns."

This heavy fabric is also ideal for donkey jacket styles with leather, /or PU yokes. Team your garments with aged leather or oilcloth/ PU for a superb combination.

Hard-wearing shacket jackets made up in Black Bear will team up perfectly with dark country tweeds and staple denim pieces.

Historical costume makers and reenactors, this iconic fabric is perfect for a profusion of hard-wearing costumes!

Other Uses:

If clothes making isn't your forte, use Black Bear for upholstery and soft furnishing projects such as rustic seat pads, boxed cushions and footstools. NB the nap may be prone to pilling - Samples are advised. You could also appliqué with checked country tweeds and leathers for a very rural/gentlemen's club vibe! Combine with red and cream woollens for a rustic Austrian Tyrol interiors scheme.

This hard-wearing fabric is ideal for bag-making and craft projects too, door stops, draught excluders and more.

Why choose wool fabric?

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
