Introduction:

Autumnal City - Virgin Wool Tweed (Gun Club Check) this first-rate wool tweed type fabric has a wonderfully autumnal palette and classic gun club check design. The combination of mellow hues and smart checked design produces a very retro/vintage style, perfect for recreating those iconic styles of the '50s and '60s and some more modern takes inspired by those eras.

Colour:

Autumnal City is woven in a traditional twill weave from alternating stripes of fine woollen yarns the colour of sandstone buildings and chequerboard pavements strewn with rich brown autumn leaves. Deep navy (the colour of dark-evening skies over chic metropolitan cities) adds the final flourish to this classic wool check.

Properties:

Autumnal City this medium-weight wool fabric has a traditional wool feel but is by no means coarse, a stable hand and reassuring medium drape quality make this an ideal fabric for a plethora of classic autumn and winter garments to take you all the way through to spring.

Garment Suggestions:

Traditional wool tweeds really are classics and the British country style we all know and love so well is universally admired. Create your own winning style by making key pieces to mix and match with all the other classics in your wardrobe, think ivory silk shirts or  super soft flannel, cosy country corduroy in rich nut brown and of course all your staple navy pieces.

Start with a classic waistcoat like our The Pattern Stash - Jemima Waistcoat this semi-fitted ladies' waistcoat is so versatile. Gents look at classic cuts like the pattern in Vanessa Mooncies book The Gentleman's Wardrobe when you are feeling more confident there are various other projects from a wallet to a flat cap and traditional jacket in this excellent book.

Emphasise the retro style of Autumnal City and create a selection of wearable styles from neat pencil skirts, simple A-line skirts and neat pinafore dresses. Amelia Skirt sits perfectly with The Jemima Waistcoat and is a classic and wearable cut. Add a simple poncho-style cape or for more experienced seamsters create a classic cape ideal for hiding under in the dreary colder days of winter.

Other Uses:

Create the smartest accessories from neck warmers, scarves, hats and caps to messenger bags. The Frame Bag from Hole House Patterns is a satisfying make with a professional finish.

Why choose wool fabric?

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
