Introduction:

Grey Matter - Tweedy Virgin Wool Flannel is suitable for a wide range of seriously smart or smart/casual clothing, depending on the patterns and styles you choose to create, and has a designer pedigree. Originally made (by Italian craftsmen) for the same designer as our SOS collection. Equally stunning and perfect for cross-seasonal wear, wool is naturally temperature-regulating!

Colour:

Grey Matter is versatile multi-tonal monotone hues that are predominant throughout this first-rate Italian woven 100% Virgin Wool flannel. Woven in a flat weave from fabulously soft and lightly brushed yarns of varying thickness to create a lightly textured tweedy appearance. The combination of natural white and black yarns produces an all-over dark grey tone.

Properties:

Grey Matter boasts a dense (lightly felted) feel with a stable handle and delicious drape, that will keep you cosy and comfortable while helping you to maintain an air of relaxed sophistication.

Style Suggestions:

This classic tweed style wool flannel fabric's wonderful soft drape quality is perfect for ladies’ and gents' clothing and has a classic tweed vibe perfect for retro styles- think Peaky Blinders and literary characters such as Sherlock Holmes and Marple. A great all-rounder to put to use for a host of classic sewing projects.

Tailors rejoice; Grey Matter is a tailoring classic – perfect for jackets, full pleated trousers like our The Pattern Stash - Cordelia Trousers. Update this classic and create sports luxe styles; bomber and Harrington style jackets with gleaming zips and stud details, create cosy utility-style over-shirts or, blouson jackets with a retro vibe.

For feminine styles Grey Matter is ideal for most skirt styles, pinafore dresses, shift dresses and dresses which require a good drape quality. Merchant and Mills The Trapeze & The Rugby are superb dress patterns that will look and feel fabulous made in this divine wool flannel.

It is excellent for layering with roll-neck sweaters. This fabric is also perfect for hats, flat and baker boy caps, bags and crafts etc. Team your Grey Matter makes with one of our SOS Collection fabrics perfect for lining your jackets, skirts etc and for statement waistcoat backs.

Why choose wool fabric?

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
