Byron's Menagerie has been named for the great British romantic poet. whose love of animals started young and remained throughout his life. notably keeping a tame bear whilst at Cambridge and inheriting his father's semi-tame wolf that lived at Newstead Abbey. All his life and wherever he was, he accumulated and surrounded himself with animals. In Ravenna, he was said to have had: ten horses, eight enormous dogs, three monkeys, five cats, an eagle, a crow and a falcon. Shelley, visiting was met on the stairs by"five peacocks, two guinea hens and an Egyptian crane."
