This wonderful naive batik and block print type Indian cotton fabric has a lovely Bohemian, ethnic, tribal look and style.
Fabrics of this type have been made in India for centuries. Batik is a resist dying method where wax is applied to the fabric in intricate designs, using intricately carved wooden blocks or freehand applied in characteristic Mhendi-like patterns often incorporating traditional symbols which represent meaning within Indian culture and religion. This method leaves previously blocked parts uncoloured, and the wax is either scraped or boiled off allowing the fabric to be dyed in consecutive colours or tones often with other designs being applied in the same manner. This creates wonderful designs with multi-hued effects. Batik designs and their patterns and motifs are distinguished by the seep through effect that the colours display - often seen as a defect, this is actually an art form in itself.
These traditional methods are sometimes combined with screen printing, which produces a more structured design.
These cool ,soft and comfortable fabrics are stable and have a soft drape quality too which will take gathers pleats and tucks perfectly. Ideal for fashioning clothes with a boho, artistic style. Keep it simple with loose flowing silhouettes, and mix with plain linens and cottons of similar spicy tones for cool summer outfits. Ideal styles are culottes and culotte shorts, maxi, and midi dresses, long overshirts and neat boxy tops. Take your ethnic styles into autumn winter and fashion quilted jackets using the block outlines as guidelines to quilt. Why not combine these AW looks with luxurious silks, satins and velvets then embellish your Artisan Mhendi Star with sequins and beads for luxurious evening styles.
Salwar kameez, kurtas, kurtis and tunics all make beautiful and comfortable styles for both day and evening wear – just add embellishments to give the luxury touch or layer up with ethnic jewellery - beads ,bangles and earrings.
Ethnic style prints and fabrics have become extremely fashionable in recent years - Indian and African batik fabrics in particular, top designers using these wonderfully versatile fabrics within their collections.
The home sewing market has also seen an increase in people choosing the African style method of freehand pattern cutting, people like Chinelo Bally – Great British Sewing Bee finalist 2014 helping to popularise this .
We think our wonderful Artisan Mhendi Star is perfect for creating similar styles with a fusion of Indian fabric and African style. Take a look at the G.B.S.B BOOK “FROM STITCH TO STYLE" for a brilliant Peplum dress pattern (and detailed construction notes) inspired by the African batik style fashions.
Artisan Mhendi Star has a rich and earthy coloured background/base with spicy turmeric tones the fine block print Mhendi inspired print has a natural pinkish beige tone which compliments the spice tones perfectly. The main feature of this complex design is a typical Indian six pointed star, featuring a red chilli powder tone and outlines of dark brown (almost black) with fine almost filigree like style. The six pointed star symbolising the six days of creation and the six attributes of god – power, wisdom, majesty, love, mercy and justice.
