2 Of The Best Sewing Inspired Mother’s Day Gifts

2 Of The Best Sewing Inspired Mother’s Day Gifts

Everyone is panicking slightly about COVID-19, so are we… However it most certainly shall not get in the way of celebrating our beloved mothers on Mother’s Day - Sunday 22nd March. This is the one special day of the year that's the perfect opportunity to show our mums how much we love and appreciate them. What better way than with a thoughtful handmade present?

Spring flowers are popping up everywhere, from tiny crocuses and sweet primroses to the perennial favourite, daffodils and narcissus, with their happy little trumpets heralding the return of spring. Handmade gifts are always the best and they show that you have spent time and consideration in making them.

We’ve written a short piece with demo garments of our best sewing themed solutions to make sure your Mother's Day gifts trump all the presents from previous years, and will show your endearing side and love for your mama (without breaking the bank and still keeping it original).

Double Layer Cami:

A quick spring-inspired sewing project using uplifting lightweight and feminine fabrics to make an easy and totally gorgeous double layer cami top, using a Sew Different ‘Quick Makes’ pattern; The Double Layer Cami. The pattern takes 2m of any of the Oh So Soft Crepe de Chine fabrics (1m of each if you want to create a coordinating layered look). This feminine cute cami top can be worn with skirts, jeans or trousers – perfect for dressing up your wardrobe staples for instant style.

. If you’re feeling adventurous create a pair of cami shorts from the leftover fabric for the prettiest summer weight nightwear. We’ve made up a pair using the scraps, creating a colour-blocked effect.  Using the scraps you should easily be able to piece something together – simple, straightforward and of course, coordinating. Our Cami Top & pants have a colour-blocked effect (zero wastage!!) and we managed to make this whole outfit using just 1m of each of the Sunshine and Apricot colourways (£12 worth of fabric).

These Oh So Soft Crepe de Chines are simply stunning and even have a touch of silk for that added luxury, after all your mum definitely deserves spoiling, doesn’t she? If you're looking for skirt inspo to team up with the Cami, try a neat pencil or A-line style using the Coral Rose - Superfine Stretch Suiting for a very classic yet chic style, with the added of more natural fibres and a very useful touch of elastane for ease of wear.

Simple colour-blocked style using only £12 of fabric (2 x £6), with optional extras. Easy! Find a cute display box and it'll look like the latest Agent Provocateur nightwear set.

Poncho / Wrap:

Another ideal Mother’s Day present is one for if you think that your mum could benefit from an extra layer of warmth. Inspired by mountain dwelling animals that always have a thick layer of fur, look no further than our easy make poncho / wrap. A super cosy, colourful, completely bespoke, quick make that is super easy and will take an hour or two at most!

We were inspired to make this having seen a huge trend in these easy wear styles. As well as a quick make, these wrap/ponchos are super practical, completely customisable and oh so very cosy warm. Ours is made using the gorgeous Padded Wool Twill and lined in a gorgeous lightweight Liberty flannel. This pattern demo comes in the form of a YouTube tutorial and is completely FREE! The video quickly guides you through all the steps with easy to follow demonstrations. All basic sewing techniques with a result that makes it look like you paid a fortune. Add extra tassels, buckles, inner sleeves, extra buttons, broaches and more for a completely unique finish. Easily adapted for different sizes and styles. Oh and did we mention that it’s FREE?!

Nothing to download, just follow the link and watch the videos. Easy.
